What we do

Place Ecologies works at the intersection of research, practice and community to regenerate relationships between people and place. We apply living systems thinking to the way places are designed, governed and inhabited. Our ambition is to move beyond extractive, growth-focused models toward local, place-based alternatives that are ecologically grounded and community-led. It just makes sense in a rapidly changing world to go back to what truly matters and grounds us.
We've evolved from the Tourism CoLab, founded in 2018, because it was never really about tourism. Over time, the challenges grew bigger than tourism and became questions about place, planetary boundaries, connection and relationships. It's about who belongs, who decides, and what it means to inhabit a place well.
Our work

Research & thought leadership
Thirty years of field experience. Named places. Real communities. Not generated. Based on decades of research, placed-based experience.
Practice
Coaching, mentoring and advisory for place practitioners, businesses and communities ready to work differently. Grounded in the field with experience across Australia and internationally.
Community and networking
Connecting researchers, practitioners and changemakers through events, programs and shared learning. A community of people who believe places deserve better.
Workshops and retreats
Spaces for thinking together, in places that matter. For practitioners, teams and communities ready to go deeper. Not a course, but the experience of thinking holitsically.

Places carry the stories of our relationship to nature, community and economy and what we care about.
